Data Architecture Professionals connect the business view of data governance with the technical structures that store, move and expose data.

Typical responsibilities

• Define how business concepts map to technical data assets.
• Work with Data Governance Professionals, Data Stewards and subject matter experts to align glossary terms with data products, data assets and columns.
• Design boundaries between enterprise governance and platform-specific catalogues.
• Align Governance Domains, Data Map domains and collections without assuming they are the same hierarchy.
• Define how data products relate to underlying tables, files, reports and other assets.
• Use metadata and lineage to understand dependencies and architectural impact.
• Work with custodians and administrators to ensure the technical estate is scanned and represented accurately.

In Microsoft Purview, architects should understand both Unified Catalog and Data Map because the consumer-facing governance model depends on technical metadata being available underneath it. They should also collaborate with governance and stewardship roles so the business vocabulary is correctly mapped to the technical estate rather than developed separately.
