Data Stewards

Data Stewards perform much of the practical day-to-day work that keeps governed data understandable, usable and trusted.

Although Data Stewards and Data Product Owners are separate Personas, their Microsoft Purview learning overlaps heavily. In many implementations, Data Product Owners retain accountability and the required domain-level role, while Data Stewards carry out delegated activities such as metadata curation, glossary work, data product maintenance and governance enrichment.

What federated governance gives you

Data Stewards curate definitions, metadata, glossary links, quality context and known limitations. The value is that important context can be explained once in a reusable place, with clearer issue ownership, rather than the same questions being answered manually again and again.
