Governance Domains and Role Assignment

A Governance Domain provides a business-aligned boundary for governing data products and related business concepts in Microsoft Purview Unified Catalog.

Why Governance Domains matter

Roles such as Data Product Owner and Data Steward are assigned within Governance Domains. This allows governance responsibilities to be federated to the people who understand a particular business area, subject area, regulatory scope or organisational function.

Role assignment

• Governance Domain Owners assign Data Product Owners and Data Stewards.
• Data Product Owner permissions are required to add data products to a Governance Domain.
• Data Steward permissions are required for curation activities such as glossary terms and OKRs.

In a practical operating model, the Governance Domain establishes the accountability boundary and the role assignments determine who can perform each governance task.
