Creating and Managing Data Products

Learn the practical responsibilities involved in creating, maintaining and publishing governed data products in Microsoft Purview.

A data product groups data assets around a defined use case and adds the business context needed for consumers to understand and use the data.

Permission requirement

Creating and managing a data product requires Data Product Owner permissions in the relevant Governance Domain. A Data Steward who is delegated this activity therefore also needs the appropriate Data Product Owner role.

Core activities

  • Define the data product name, purpose and use case.
  • Identify accountable ownership and stewardship.
  • Add the relevant data assets.
  • Connect useful business concepts such as glossary terms.
  • Maintain descriptions and other governance metadata.
  • Review access requirements and policies.
  • Publish the data product when it is ready for consumers.

The aim is not simply to register technical assets, but to package them into something a data consumer can recognise, understand and assess for use.
