Data Product Lifecycle — Draft, Published and Expired

A governed data product has a lifecycle rather than being created once and left unchanged.

Draft

Draft is the working state used while the product is being curated. Owners and stewards can refine the description, add assets, connect business concepts and configure access policies.

Published

Publishing makes the product discoverable to data consumers. Microsoft Purview requires the Governance Domain to be published first, and the data product needs the required assets and access-policy configuration before publication.

Return to draft

A published data product can be unpublished and returned to Draft when material changes are needed. Access policies are managed while the product is unpublished.

Expired

Expired is used when a data product is no longer intended for normal consumer use but should remain available to governance roles for management and context.

Ongoing stewardship

• Review descriptions and contacts.
• Check assets and business relationships remain correct.
• Review access-policy requirements.
• Monitor quality and fitness-for-use evidence.
• Update lifecycle state when the product changes or is retired.
