Adding Data Assets to a Data Product

Understand the permissions and governance checks needed when associating Data Map assets with a Microsoft Purview data product.

Data products are connected to the underlying data assets that deliver their use case, such as tables, files, datasets or reports discovered through Microsoft Purview Data Map.

Permissions matter

Data Product Owners and Data Stewards need appropriate Data Map permissions to read the assets they want to add to a data product. Unified Catalog governance permissions do not automatically provide access to every technical asset in Data Map.

Before adding an asset

  • Confirm that the asset belongs to the intended data product and use case.
  • Check that the asset is the correct environment and authoritative source.
  • Review ownership, stewardship and available metadata.
  • Consider lineage, classifications and sensitivity where relevant.
  • Ensure the product description explains how the asset contributes to the consumer need.

Linking assets to a data product connects technical metadata in Data Map with business context in Unified Catalog.
