Governance Domains, Data Map Domains and Collections — Different Boundaries

Understand why Unified Catalog Governance Domains and Data Map domains or collections serve different architectural purposes and should not automatically mirror each other.

Microsoft Purview uses similar language for business governance boundaries and technical Data Map boundaries, but they solve different problems.

Governance Domains

Governance Domains are business-aligned boundaries for ownership, data products and other business concepts in Unified Catalog.

Data Map domains and collections

Data Map domains and collections organise sources and technical assets and provide access-control boundaries for the Data Map.

Architecture principle

The two hierarchies can be aligned, but they do not need to be identical. A technical collection hierarchy might reflect platforms, environments or operational ownership, while a Governance Domain hierarchy might reflect business functions, subject areas, regulatory boundaries or programmes.

Data Estate mappings provide a deliberate connection between the two models without forcing one hierarchy to become the other.
