Source Registration and Scan Scope

Before Microsoft Purview can scan a platform, the source must first be registered in Data Map.

Registration

Registration records the source address and places the source into the appropriate collection or Data Map domain.

Define the scan scope

The available scope depends on the connector. A source can often be scanned in full or restricted to relevant databases, catalogs, schemas or other supported boundaries.

Good custodianship

• Register the authoritative source rather than unnecessary duplicates.
• Place it in the correct collection.
• Scope scans to the assets needed for governance and discovery.
• Allow for future assets where the connector supports path or scope-based inclusion.
• Review source-specific Microsoft prerequisites before configuring the scan.

Good scope design reduces unnecessary ingestion while still providing complete enough metadata and lineage for the intended governance use case.
