Data Custodians — Role & Responsibilities

Understand the Data Custodian organisational Persona, the technical responsibilities it represents and the Microsoft Purview permissions commonly used to perform those tasks.

Data Custodian is an organisational Persona rather than a named Microsoft Purview role. It describes the people responsible for the technical data estate and the operational controls that allow governed data to be discovered, scanned and maintained.

Typical responsibilities

  • Register and maintain technical data sources.
  • Support source authentication and network connectivity.
  • Create, schedule and monitor Data Map scans.
  • Ensure technical metadata is available and current.
  • Support lineage, classifications and source-level metadata.
  • Work with platform teams to maintain the permissions Purview needs.

Purview permissions

Microsoft Purview uses its own role model. Data Source Administrator permissions are used for managing sources and scans, while appropriate Data Map read or write permissions are also required depending on the task.

The Persona therefore represents the operating responsibility; the Microsoft roles provide the permissions needed to carry out the work.
