Data Products and Data Assets — Logical to Physical Architecture

Learn how data products provide a logical consumer-facing use case while Data Map assets represent the underlying physical or platform-specific data.

A Microsoft Purview Data Product is a business concept that groups data assets around a defined use case.

Logical layer

The data product provides a recognisable name, purpose, ownership, description, access context and related business concepts for consumers.

Physical and platform layer

The associated data assets can be tables, files, reports or other supported objects discovered through Data Map.

Architectural value

This separation allows the same technical estate to be presented through business-facing products without requiring consumers to understand platform structures first.

Architects should ensure each data product has a coherent use case and that the assets associated with it genuinely contribute to that use case rather than simply grouping technical objects because they share a platform or schema.
