Governance Domains, Administration and Data Estate Mappings

Understand the administrator’s role in Governance Domains and how Data Estate mappings connect business governance boundaries to Data Map collections.

Governance Domains organise business governance responsibilities in Unified Catalog, while Data Map collections organise and secure technical assets.

Administrative role

Purview Administrators and Data Governance administrators help establish the domain structure and delegate Governance Domain ownership and other roles.

Domain owners

Once delegated, Governance Domain Owners manage the domain and assign roles such as Data Product Owner and Data Steward within their area.

Data Estate mappings

A Governance Domain can be mapped to a Data Map collection. This guides owners and stewards towards the technical assets that belong to their governance area, but it does not replace the Data Map permissions required to access those assets.

The administrator should therefore keep the business governance model and technical access model aligned without treating them as the same hierarchy.
