Microsoft Purview Administrators — Role & Responsibilities

Microsoft Purview administration is broader than maintaining one feature or one catalogue page. It provides the platform-level controls that allow Data Map and Unified Catalog responsibilities to be delegated safely.

Purview Administrator responsibilities

The Purview Administrators role group provides high-level administrative capabilities such as creating, editing and deleting domains and performing role assignments.

Administration is not every role

Source and scan administration, Unified Catalog governance and Data Map access use additional role models. A Purview Administrator should therefore design and delegate permissions rather than assuming one administrator account should perform every operational task.

Typical responsibilities

• Establish the Purview permission model.
• Create and manage Data Map domains and administrative boundaries.
• Delegate collection and domain administration.
• Support Unified Catalog governance-role assignment.
• Coordinate source and scanning administration with technical custodians.
• Apply least privilege and review inherited access.
