Source and Scan Administration — Shared Responsibility

Source and scan administration should be deliberately delegated rather than automatically absorbed into the Purview Administrator role.

Data Source Administrator

Microsoft provides the Data Source Administrators role group for managing Data Map data sources and scans.

Data Custodian

In an organisational operating model, Data Custodians often understand the source platform, required permissions, network dependencies and operational ownership needed to make scanning work.

Purview Administrator

The Purview Administrator establishes the administrative framework and delegates the appropriate source and Data Map permissions.

This separation helps preserve least privilege while keeping technical responsibility close to the teams that operate the source systems.
